Are you investing in sales training? If not you may be missing out on a lot of extra income.

Recently the American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) delivered their 2007 State of Training Study. In it, they address the national average of investment-per-employee in training.

Their research showed that the average company invested approximately $1200/person in training in 2006—and the most telling indicator of all is it went down 7% from 2005.

More and more companies are cutting back on their budget. I’m not sure of the exact reason why, however, I do have some opinions. Most people will say it’s because their not making as much money.

Why is that?

Well I would guess it’s because their sales people aren’t selling enough business.

And whose fault is that?

The company?

Or maybe the sales person?

I would tend to fault the sales person. Many sales people don’t invest in themselves. They wait for their company to provide them with . That way they can blame someone else when they fail. “It’s not my fault, it’s the companies fault”.

It’s time for sales people to get off their butts and invest money in their own training.

The top sales people do.

In my 25 years in this business, I have consistently spent over 5% of my income on sales training for myself.

Think about it. If you invest 5% of your income, don’t you believe you will see at least that much of an increase in your income? I would bet you easily would and probably a whole lot more.

Don’t wait for your company to invest in you. Anyway, why would they want to invest in you if you’re not willing to?

Reach into your pocket and make an investment in yourself. You might be surprised at the tremendous return you receive.
